Birth Control: Your Rights, Right Now

Q: Health-care reform is under fire. What are some significant changes women will see if the new policies stick?
As complicated and imperfect as the process was, it was the biggest increase in health-care coverage for women and their families that they will ever see in their lifetimes. It is historic. Getting rid of insurance bias for preexisting conditions is huge. Being a victim of domestic violence, having a cesarean section, or being pregnant are no longer reasons to deny someone insurance coverage, and in the past they have been.

Q: What will the impact be on a woman's basic health-care needs?
It will be tremendous. One of the most exciting things is that under the women's healthcare amendment put forth by Senator Barbara Mikulski, further preventive care will be available without co-pay; the Department of Health and Human Services is now deciding what this will include. Lots will be covered under this, including mammograms.

Q: Will birth control be covered without co-pay?

Personal Lubes For Hotter Sex

Call it the Goldilocks rule of great sex: When it comes to lubrication, too much or too little can cause your sack session to flop. But when there's just the right amount, it boosts below-the-belt sensations. "Lubrication is your body's way of telling you that you're turned on," says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine. "You can't have comfortable or successful sex without it."

Every woman lubricates differently?there's no "normal" amount of wetness?and most women should be able to tell when they're good to go. But if you find yourself bone-dry when you're ready to jump his bones, don't worry: Figuring out the reasons and solutions will ensure that you both enjoy a smooth ride.

Oh well if I can have a rainbow mowhawk and a fancy nickname like Dan the Outlaw Hardy, I’m sold!   Tapout. It’s not just a clothing and equipment line for Mixed Martial Arts practitioners and their ring girls,it’s also the password into the very serious, highly entertaining and slightly strange sub-culture of MMA. What, you thought MMA was just a sport? So did I until I started this Experiment. True, other Experiments I have done have had significant devoted and vocal fan bases (holla Crossfitters!) but nothing has ever come close to matching MMA. These people need their own [...]

The Secret to Being Fit For Life: Muscle Memory

Five weeks and five days after giving birth, and a full nine months since running a single step, WH's Lesley Rotchford, 34, laced up her sneaks and banged out five miles. Her muscles groaned a bit from the abrupt reentry, but with 20 years of distance running under their belt, they remembered just what to do.

It's a phenomenon aptly called muscle memory. Simply put, when you teach your body how to do something?ride a bike, surf, strike some yoga poses, run a few miles?it creates a physiological blueprint. So even if you take some time off, you'll get back to where you were faster than it took you to learn the exercise in the first place. "Muscle memory stems from your body's learning not just how to perform a task, but also how to break down muscle tissue and then repair and rebuild it," explains William Kraemer, Ph.D., a professor in the department of kinesiology at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. "That physiological knowledge lets you come back from injury, surgery, and even pregnancy faster, easier, and often better than before," he says.

What Smoking Does to Your Body

The average cigarette is gone in 10 puffs and five minutes, but that's five minutes of havoc as 4,000 chemicals infiltrate your organs.

0 to 10 Seconds
As you take the first drag, smoke passes through your mouth, leaving a faint brown film on your pearly whites. Toxic gases such as formaldehyde and ammonia immediately put your immune system on alert, causing allover inflammation.

Once in the windpipe, the cigarette smoke temporarily slows your cilia, the tiny sweepers that work to clear your respiratory system of mucus and invading particles. Meanwhile, airborne nicotine passes instantly into your bloodstream through the millions of capillaries in your lungs.

Your body gets a jolt of energy as that nicotine hits your adrenal glands, triggering an outpouring of adrenaline that raises your blood pressure and heart rate. Your heart is unable to relax fully between beats—and you are now at a higher risk of having a stroke.

Could You Have a Thyroid Disorder?

Kristin Angelov was 26 when the exhaustion hit. Getting up in the morning was a superhuman effort, a struggle compounded by her suddenly dismal mood. "I would be in meetings at work and feel so tired and dizzy, like I was going to pass out," she says. And though the once-energetic writer stuck to a healthy diet, she packed on five pounds in two weeks. What's more, whenever she stepped out into the cold, her fingernails and toes turned a faint shade of blue. She dragged herself to her primary-care doctor, who ran a series of tests. Kristin's big problems, her M.D. told her, stemmed from a small place?the thyroid gland in her neck.

How to Be Brave And Unmask Your Inner Hero

When Maureen Connolly was 33—and seven months pregnant—she jumped out of her seat at a crowded restaurant, grabbed a toddler from a stranger's arms, and performed a lifesaving maneuver that prevented the child from choking. Ask her what made her do it, and she humbly says anyone else would have done the same.

But not everyone would have. When it comes to answering the call of duty, many people would rather let it go to voicemail. On the ABC show What Would You Do? hidden cameras capture nice, ordinary folks ignoring the bullying of an overweight stranger or saying nothing as a waitress is sexually harassed. "Fear, conformity to authority, and aversion to risk run deep," says Frank Farley, Ph.D., a psychologist at Temple University in Philadelphia. "Most people don't want to take heroic action if it will put them in danger."

5 Juicy Relationship Questions For Stephen Moyer

1 What's the best piece of relationship advice you've ever been given?

It has taken me years to realize this, but it's far better if you tell the truth right at the beginning. Don't try to say what you think someone wants to hear. My missus [Anna Paquin] shoots from the hip. The cleaner and simpler it is, the better.

2 Finish this sentence: I could never be with a woman who...

Didn't like boxing. Our trainer jokes about putting Anna into a fight, but he knows full well if he goes too far with the jokes she'll just take him up on it. I'm a big fan of boxing, and she loves it too.

3 What's your most alpha quality?

Protecting the herd, probably. I'm not a very violent dude, and if something can be settled without any physicality, I'm always in favor of that. But if somebody comes near my kids, the atavistic crazy lion comes out.

4 Your girliest quality?

Tone up Anytime, Anywhere

What to Expect You'll do this total-body routine on three nonconsecutive days a week: Start with move 1 and do as many reps as you can in 60 seconds. Losing Weight For Health

Mary Renwick, 30
Stay-at-home mom, Monroe, MI
Before: 255 lbs
After: 155 lbs

When Mary Renwick moved with her husband, Tim, who was in the Navy, from Monroe, Michigan, to a military base in Sicily in 1999, her six-foot frame was lean and willowy. But while Tim worked odd hours at his new job, Mary filled her lonely days with food. "I ate for comfort and indulged in the local cuisine—oily pasta, buttered bread, lots of cannoli," she says. By the time Tim was discharged and they returned to Monroe in 2002, she was 90 pounds heavier and depressed. In the next seven years, Mary gave birth to two boys, which improved her spirits but not her weight.

The Change
In December 2009, Mary reached down to pick up her youngest son, Parker, then 5 months old, and felt a stab in her back. A visit to the doctor revealed two bulging disks and a pinched nerve. "When I learned my weight was the main factor in my injury, I decided I could not, would not, live like that anymore," she says.

Sumo Deadlift a Useful Variation

In the Sumo deadlift, you adopt a wide stance with the arms holding the  bar inside the line  of the feet. You can use the standard wrists and hands over the top of the bar, or you can use the mixed grip with one hand rotated under the bar. Sometimes this helps you to hold onto the bar, but some people have trouble with wrist flexibility.

Afghanistan Women: Kicking And Dreaming

Send a note of support to the young women on the Afghan national football team at AfghanWomen@rodale.com.

The rusted railings and uneven playing field of Afghanistan's Olympic sports stadium in Kabul are depressing enough, but it's the public executions that were carried out there by the Taliban that cast the longest shadow. Perhaps no one thinks of them more often than the handful of young women now occasionally permitted to use the field?the roughly two dozen members of the country's first female soccer club, the Afghan women's national football team. (In most parts of the world, soccer is called football.)

It's only on rare days they practice outside?the large field is usually reserved for men?but when they do, the players sense the ghosts of the women who died there, most of them shot execution-style in front of thousands of men for crimes such as adultery. "There was a lady in a burka who they stoned to death there when I was a child, and when we go to play, I think about her body under the grass," said Sabra Azizi, 20, who plays midfield.

Have Better Sex

Want to get your horn dog into a down dog? Unfortunately it seems a lot of guys aren't any more enthused about going to yoga than they are about going to the latest Paul Rudd movie. "You won't see many guys in yoga because they don't feel comfortable letting go of control," says Charles Matkin, who owns Matkin Yoga in New York City. "They want to be macho and punch things." But he explains that even?or perhaps especially?macho men can learn a thing or two on the mat that they can use on the mattress.

"Sex is primal," Matkin says. "You have to be okay with being dominant and submissive." He says that men's abilities in bed are also limited by back pain and overall muscle tension?two other problems yoga addresses. Men of the obviously-I'm-a-sex-god mindset may not realize just how tight their lower back and hips are from sports and sitting, or that that stiffness could possibly impact their performance. A mat quickie can correct it.

Velocity of Movement and Muscle Fiber Type in Weight Training

The standard theory of 'power training' in the weights and resistance training realm is that lighter loads at higher velocity produce muscle fiber types (2 and 2A) that are optimized for speed and power rather than outright strength, for which heavier loads and slower exercise movement velocities are deemed to be best. I've written about power training here.

5 Ways New Yorkers Stay Healthy (My first-ever girl?s trip!)

Broadway! Times Square! Greenwich Village! The World Trade Center (ish)! Best cheesecake ever! A dead rat the size of a cat!! This weekend was a whirlwind and thanks to a flight delayed by bad weather (seriously, after everything this country has been through this past year with crazy snow, wind and heat you decide to delay a flight because of a little rain?!) I didn’t get home until the wee hours of this morning. So today I’m resting and trying to unpack with a child permanently attached to each limb. Nice: They miss me when I’m gone! Not-as-nice: They’ll never [...]

Blood, Sex and a C-Section [Mixed Martial Arts Experiment Update & Videos!]

Relationship Advice: What's Your Attachment Style?

Research on how we form and behave in relationships (called attachment theory) shows that pretty much everyone falls into one of three categories: anxious, avoidant, or secure. Here's the breakdown: About 20 percent of people are anxious, roughly 25 percent fall into the avoidant camp, and the remainder are considered secure, according to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Life experiences and genes play a role in how you form love connections, but your romantic MO mostly stems from your childhood (shocker, right?). The way you learned to bond with your parents as a baby follows you into adulthood, affecting your romantic relationships, which, in turn, continue to shape your attachment style. Identifying your style (and his) provides you some of the best relationship advice for women: It tells you how to move into the secure group?and if you're already there, realizing it can help you make your relationship even stronger.

Get Perfect Hair: Curly Vs Straight

Curly
Hair M.O.
Turns out, guys love curvy bodies and curvy hair. "Men often see curls as more feminine and perhaps sexier," says Rose Weitz, Ph.D., a sociologist at Arizona State University who studies perceptions of women's hair.

What's more, Allison Woodruff, a stylist at Marie Robinson Salon in New York City, says she's noticed that her clients with curly hair tend to be more self-accepting and laid back. She adds that curls flatter most face shapes (except for round, because the roundness of the curls plays up the roundness of the face) and can act like an instant face-lift, drawing attention away from wrinkles.

Texture Traits
Curly girls are prone to dryness because the hair shaft is lifted and open instead of lying flat. This means strands have less protection from damage and lose moisture easily.

Wear Super-Bright Makeup

Cheeks
Bright blush can perk up your face. Using a large powder brush (not a blush brush), dust a hot-pink hue over the apples of your cheeks and your nose; try Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Amused, $25, sephora.com. "A powder brush will disperse the color so that most of it sits on your apples and the rest just sinks into your skin so it looks like a natural flush," says makeup artist Emily Kate Warren.

If your skin is dry, opt for a cream blush instead; try YSL Creme de Blush in #5, $38, yslbeauty us.com. Use a damp cosmetic sponge to blend the cream right onto the apples of your cheeks.

Exercise: Triceps and Shoulders with Exercise Band

Sit upright on a stability ball, stool, or chair. With your elbows at the same height as your shoulders, you should feel that there is slight tension on the exercise band.

Without letting your elbows drop down, straighten your arms. Your elbows and hands should be at shoulder height at the end of the movement.

With control, bend your elbows and return to the start position.

Repeat 10-12 times, rest, then repeat the exercise.
