Julianne Hough: Blonde Ambition

Dazzling pro dancer Julianne Hough snagged the coveted Dancing with the Stars mirror-ball trophy two seasons in a row—both in 2007—paired with speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and race-car driver Helio Castroneves. But she had her eye on a bigger prize. So in 2008 she took a break from the show to pursue a singing and acting career.

Hough Stuff
Too much too soon? Not for this multitalented 22-year-old. Her 2008 self-titled debut album nabbed her two awards from the Academy of Country Music (her next album, still untitled, is in the works), and in 2010 she hit the big screen in Burlesque alongside Cher and Christina Aguilera. And according to her brother and fellow DWTS champ, Derek, 25, "she's just getting warmed up."

He's not kidding. This October, Julianne can be seen in the remake of the 1984 cult classic Footloose. After that, her biggest part yet: a starring role in the big-screen musical Rock of Ages—opposite Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, and Mary J. Blige—playing Sherrie, a small-town girl who moves to Hollywood to make it big.

Awesome Eye Makeup Tips

Brush Up
Your fingers will get the job done, but good brushes are better for blending, lining, and building color. Here are the three you really need:

1. Flat Shadow Brush

It's ideal for applying your base color. Choose one made with supersoft natural hairs, like sable or goat, if you're working with powdered shadow. For creams, use a brush with silky synthetic bristles, such as nylon or taklon. Try Sonia Kashuk Tools Small Eye Shadow Brush, $10, target.com

2. Blender Brush

Small and fluffy, this tool is perfect for shading your creases, emphasizing the outer corners of your eyes, and blending shadows together. Try Bobbi Brown Eye Sweep Brush, $30, bobbibrown.com

3. Liner Brush

Use this skinny, pointed brush to work color between the roots of your lashes. Try Mark Eye Liner Brush, $6, meetmark.com

Relay For Life: My First Fundraising Race [Why I exercise]

“If you are a cancer survivor, light your glo-stick.” A few lights sparked around us. “If you have a parent that has had cancer, light your glo-stick.” More lights crackled on around us as the stillness of an impending Midwestern thunder storm pressed down. “If you have a child with cancer, light your glo-stick.” My heart caught in my chest and I said a silent prayer, thankful that my glo-stick remained unlit. And on it went until the bleachers around us were lit up with red, yellow and green glo-sticks like so many fireflies in the deepening dark. As we [...]

Losing Weight For Health

Mary Renwick, 30
Stay-at-home mom, Monroe, MI
Before: 255 lbs
After: 155 lbs

When Mary Renwick moved with her husband, Tim, who was in the Navy, from Monroe, Michigan, to a military base in Sicily in 1999, her six-foot frame was lean and willowy. But while Tim worked odd hours at his new job, Mary filled her lonely days with food. "I ate for comfort and indulged in the local cuisine—oily pasta, buttered bread, lots of cannoli," she says. By the time Tim was discharged and they returned to Monroe in 2002, she was 90 pounds heavier and depressed. In the next seven years, Mary gave birth to two boys, which improved her spirits but not her weight.

The Change
In December 2009, Mary reached down to pick up her youngest son, Parker, then 5 months old, and felt a stab in her back. A visit to the doctor revealed two bulging disks and a pinched nerve. "When I learned my weight was the main factor in my injury, I decided I could not, would not, live like that anymore," she says.

Relationship Advice: What's Your Attachment Style?

Research on how we form and behave in relationships (called attachment theory) shows that pretty much everyone falls into one of three categories: anxious, avoidant, or secure. Here's the breakdown: About 20 percent of people are anxious, roughly 25 percent fall into the avoidant camp, and the remainder are considered secure, according to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

Life experiences and genes play a role in how you form love connections, but your romantic MO mostly stems from your childhood (shocker, right?). The way you learned to bond with your parents as a baby follows you into adulthood, affecting your romantic relationships, which, in turn, continue to shape your attachment style. Identifying your style (and his) provides you some of the best relationship advice for women: It tells you how to move into the secure group?and if you're already there, realizing it can help you make your relationship even stronger.

Mammography Studies Add Fuel to Breast Cancer Screening Debate

Pain Tolerance: Outsmart the Ouch!

Childbirth. Menstrual cramps. Migraines. If you were born with XX chromosomes, you're probably well acquainted with all kinds of discomfort. Women are more likely to suffer chronic pain than men are, thanks in part to certain female-centric conditions (think: endometriosis, fibromyalgia). But new research shows that pain can be a mental game, and that you can up your tolerance by retraining your brain.

A World of Hurt
When you stub your toe or sprain your wrist, the millions of nerves in your skin and tissues register the sensation and carry it to your brain for decoding. Your mind gets the message and immediately shoots back a "danger!" signal in the form of a sharp ache. All of this happens in a matter of milliseconds and sends your body into fight-or-flight mode, which can cause rapid heartbeat, sweating, hyper-breathing, and lightning-speed reflexes (the reason you can whip your hand away from a hot stove), says Teresa D. Long, M.D., director of the Persistent Pain Management clinic at the University of Kansas Hospital.

Perk Up! Coffee Packs Tons of Health Benefits!

Green tea may get all the glory, but the top source of age-avenging antioxidants in the American diet is a different hot beverage: coffee. The beans behind your brew?actually the seeds of the coffee tree's fruit?contain the same kind of nutritionally supercharged compounds found in tea and other plant-based foods such as wine and chocolate.

Health Benefits in Every Cup
Studies show that coffee can help ward off mental decline, certain cancers, Parkinson's disease, high blood pressure, and even extra pounds (yes, really!). A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that each time you refill your cup of java (caffeinated or decaf) in a day, you slash your diabetes risk by 7 percent; in another study, drinking two to three cups of coffee each day was associated with a 21 percent lower risk of heart disease.

The Where of Being a Father

That’s me sitting on my dad’s lap right in the middle! Ah, the ’80′s. You can’t tell but I have my Rainbow Brite shirt on. In the parking lot of the hospital where I was born, he dropped me while carrying me to the car to bring me home for the first time. I reciprocated months later by sitting on his face with a soaked diaper while he was napping. (And that was back when cloth diapers were the norm.) In preschool he caught fireflies in a bottle for me. I serenaded him with my “movie star voice” and told [...]

No More Foot Pain

Apart from the occasional pedi, women tend to use and abuse their feet—maybe because "foot care" has less-than-sexy (OK, geriatric) connotations. But hey, bunions and bone spurs happen...a lot. Research from the nation's top doctors shows that most people have a foot injury of some sort by age 40, and women undergo the majority of common-problem foot surgeries. Sidestep heinous maladies by treating your feet right.

Foot Foes
Genes play a leading role in female foot woes. So does anatomy: "In general, women have narrower heels and weaker joints than men do,"says Frank Valente, D.C., a chiropractor in Manhattan. "Plus, irregular menstrual cycles and lower-fat diets can decrease bone mass, putting women at increased risk for ankle sprains and dislocated foot bones." Also, wider hips mean that some women are predisposed to walking knock-kneed, which can throw off the body's alignment and stance, and potentially lead to foot injuries, says Eric Horton, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon in San Diego.

Exercise: Alternating Front & Back Shoulder Raise

Stand on an exercise band with each end of the band in your hands. Keep your back straight and your knees slightly bent. Start with your hands beside your hips.

Slowly move one hand forward and one hand backward. Make sure that you don't twist your torso at all. Also avoid shrugging your shoulders.

Bring your hands back to the starting position, then keep going until the opposite hand is forward and the other hand is back. This completes one repetition.

Repeat 8 - 10 times, rest, then repeat the exercise sequence as desired.

Flat Belly Workout

The key to a sculpted midsection is using smart and effective stabilizing moves. But if your body fat is too high, it won't matter how wisely you work your abs?they won't show. That's why you need to add those moves to a full-body strength and cardio routine that will boost your metabolism, blast fat, and finally uncover those abs you've been working so hard to develop.

And while the exercises can be thrown into your workout at random, that tactic will get you just a fraction of their benefits. For full value, work on progression.

Here's how it works: After a 10 minute dynamic warm-up, do the first two moves as instructed, then finish with a total-body workout. Do this three times a week on nonconsecutive days for two weeks, then go to the next two moves. Repeat the pattern over eight weeks until you've done all eight moves.

The best part? With this easy printable list, you can get your fitness expert-certified sweat on for free. Learn more about the workout or get the printable version now.

Bonnie Russell was having lunch with a friend in a pub near Detroit when she got a wake-up call—one that actually came on her cell. A few minutes earlier, she had used the phone to snap a photo of her lunchtime combo: "A lot of seriously unhealthy fried crap" she called it when she posted it on Twitter with the wry title "Lunch of champions." She received a tweet back from a total stranger who had found her public Twitter feed and used it to track down the neighborhood where she was having lunch at that very moment.

Lucky for Bonnie, the stranger was information security engineer Ben Jackson, cofounder of ICanStalkU.com, a watchdog website that alerts Twitter users about the dangers of geotags. Bonnie, 40, was shocked—she works in digital marketing and considers herself a pretty educated user of technology. "I'm very concerned with what kind of data I share with the public," she says. "And I thought I had disabled any functions on my phone and Twitter that might broadcast my location."

Weight Loss Story: Kristen Collins

Before: 180 lbs
After: 130 lbs

As a teen growing up in Silver Spring, Maryland, Kristen Collins Eccleston regularly dined on greasy fast food with her friends. After college she met her now husband, Bryan, and got into the habit of splitting extra-large pizzas with him and ordering buffalo wings for Sunday-night football. Their junk-food feasts caused Kristen to tip the scale at 180 pounds. When Bryan proposed in 2009, it was a wake-up call for the 25-year-old special-ed teacher, who vowed to shed weight from her 5'6" frame before getting hitched.

The Change
While shopping for size-16 wedding gowns in February 2010, Kristen's mom sensed her daughter's misery. She sent Kristen an encouraging note, pledging her support and offering to buy her a new smaller-size outfit for the rehearsal dinner. "My mom wanted to see me happy, so she motivated me to do something about my weight," says Kristen. "She told me to do it as a wedding gift to myself."

Workout Playlist plan: Strong lyrics

Why it works A 2006 study at York St. John University in the U.K. found that students could hold a 2.4-pound weight straight out in front of their bodies at shoulder height for up to 10 percent longer when they listened to a workout music mix that had motivational pop or rock music for an entire torturous session. The all-music workout beat out listening to white noise and listening to music for only part of the time. But the key is to choose tracks with lyrics that get you amped you up--yes, even if they include the words "Don't Stop Believin'."

Why We Love Food

There was the one you took to bed, even though you knew you'd regret it the next morning. And the one you didn't want any of your friends to know about. And of course the one you knew was good for you but just didn't turn you on. If only we were talking about lovers—and not pints of ice cream, pork rinds, and steamed spinach. Compared with food, romantic partners are relatively simple. Yes, they sometimes cause you to weep, curse, or toss a few shirts out onto the sidewalk, but you can always walk away from those relationships.

You and food, on the other hand, are stuck together for life.

Even if you consider yourself "normal" when it comes to what you choose to eat, your relationship with food is likely more complicated than you realize. It might be the most complex relationship in your life, which explains why a poll of more than 6,000 Women's Health readers found that nearly 30 percent feel stressed about food—every...single...day. (Even more report food anxiety at least occasionally.)

You'll work out 5 days a week?alternating between fast-paced strength circuits and cardio intervals.

On days 1, 3, and 5 you?ll focus on strength: Perform one set of the first exercise and then quickly move on to the next one until you?ve completed one set of all five strength exercises. That?s one circuit. Rest for one minute, and repeat. You?ll complete the circuit three times.

On days 2 and 4 you'll focus on cardio: Complete the 20-minute cardio interval using high-intensity bursts to push your body to the max in the shortest amount of time.

Sign up for the WH Personal Trainer Beach-Ready Body Workout and track your way to a hotter bod!

Wear Super-Bright Makeup

Cheeks
Bright blush can perk up your face. Using a large powder brush (not a blush brush), dust a hot-pink hue over the apples of your cheeks and your nose; try Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Amused, $25, sephora.com. "A powder brush will disperse the color so that most of it sits on your apples and the rest just sinks into your skin so it looks like a natural flush," says makeup artist Emily Kate Warren.

If your skin is dry, opt for a cream blush instead; try YSL Creme de Blush in #5, $38, yslbeauty us.com. Use a damp cosmetic sponge to blend the cream right onto the apples of your cheeks.

Why Women Cry (And Should!)

On a recent flight from New York to Los Angeles, I had a sudden urge to cry. I'd just said good-bye to my goddaughter after a wonderful weekend visit, and being with her reminded me of just how badly I wanted to be somebody's mom and how that wasn't working out so well.

At first I fought the feeling, mostly because I didn't want to alarm the flight attendants. But also because my seatmate was a rather serious-looking man in a suit reading The Wall Street Journal, and I was loathe to make the six hours I had to share an intimate space with him any more awkward than it needed to be.

So I pulled out an arsenal of reading material from my bag and willed myself to pull it together. But I just couldn't snuff out the hollow feeling in my stomach or the burning sensation in my throat, and before I knew it, tears were slipping out of the corners of my eyes. Suit guy nervously asked if I was OK. "Oh, you're so sweet," I replied, mopping my tears away with the drink napkin he'd gently handed me. "I'm fine, really." And I meant it. Crying?however ill-timed, humiliating, or unattractive?always makes me feel better.

Vanilla Whey Protein Smoothie Recipe: Strawberry Banana

I’m a big fan of smoothies and instead of eating my normal breakfast this morning I decided to make a vanilla whey protein smoothie. The Secret to Being Fit For Life: Muscle Memory

Five weeks and five days after giving birth, and a full nine months since running a single step, WH's Lesley Rotchford, 34, laced up her sneaks and banged out five miles. Her muscles groaned a bit from the abrupt reentry, but with 20 years of distance running under their belt, they remembered just what to do.

It's a phenomenon aptly called muscle memory. Simply put, when you teach your body how to do something?ride a bike, surf, strike some yoga poses, run a few miles?it creates a physiological blueprint. So even if you take some time off, you'll get back to where you were faster than it took you to learn the exercise in the first place. "Muscle memory stems from your body's learning not just how to perform a task, but also how to break down muscle tissue and then repair and rebuild it," explains William Kraemer, Ph.D., a professor in the department of kinesiology at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. "That physiological knowledge lets you come back from injury, surgery, and even pregnancy faster, easier, and often better than before," he says.

Jump in the Pool to Lose Body Fat

A pool might not be the first place you think of going when you're looking to shape up and slim down? but perhaps it should be. No other workout burns calories, boosts metabolism, and firms every muscle in your body (without putting stress on your joints) better than swimming.

Look no further than superstar Natalie Coughlin to observe how water can whittle a sexy, sculpted silhouette. And you don't have to be an Olympic gold medalist to get the perfect body. When researchers at Indiana University compared recreational fitness swimmers with nonswimmers, they found that swimmers of all ages had more lean muscle and trimmer waists and hips.

When Gym Trainers Hog the Workstations

I don't know about you, but trainers who set themselves up with some sort of mini-circuit involving two or more workstations really ping me off. Like today, this guy was using a leg press machine and I wandered in to the squat rack only to be told that he was 'still using that'. Excuse me? He did have some weights on the bar, but since when can someone occupy two workstations at busy times?

Michelle Monaghan: Life Is Beautiful

A starring role opposite Robert Downey Jr.—it's an opportunity any young actress would kill for. But Michelle Monaghan almost passed up what would come to be her big-screen break: Right before her audition for the 2005 movie Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, she got a serious case of cold feet. "I thought, There is no way I can do this!" she remembers. "I was literally calling up my agent to cancel the audition, but thought, You're going in and you're going to do this. And as the phone was ringing, I hung up." She thinks back to the moment and says, "Whenever something really scares the shit out of me, I know that it's the right thing for me to do."

Needless to say, she got the part. Michelle's critically acclaimed performance led to roles in films such as Gone Baby Gone, Made of Honor, and Eagle Eye—and then right back into the arms of Robert Downey Jr. in the new screwball comedy Due Date, which also stars funnyman Zach Galifianakis. Her Sofia Coppola-directed drama Somewhere, which won a prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice International Film Festival in September, hits theaters in a few weeks.

Weight Loss Story: Jennifer Martin

Before: 211 lbs
After: 126 lbs

For most of her adult life, Jennifer Martin hovered around 200 pounds, and it weighed on more than just the scale. Her difficulty finding clothes that fit made her feel uncomfortable and self-conscious, and the stay-at-home mom from Collegeville, Pennsylvania, hated that she never had energy to play with her two kids. In 2009, the scale hit a high of 211 pounds, and Jennifer, who is 5'2", realized she weighed as much as her foot-taller husband. Curbing her sweet tooth and lacing up her running shoes helped the 31-year-old shed 85 pounds and get into the best shape of her life.

The Change
In early November 2009, while bingeing on her kids' leftover Halloween candy, Jennifer was suddenly flooded with guilt. "I saw my out-of-control habits through their eyes and knew I needed to change," she says. She put down a handful of chocolate and vowed to stop her chaotic eating.
