You may pride yourself on being a strong, independent woman, but chances are, there's still one place you let a man order you around. No, not in the bedroom! In your car. And the voice feeding you directives doesn't belong to your significant other—it emanates from your dashboard.

Yes, we're talking about the calm presence of your global positioning system (GPS). Where would you be without him, we mean, it? Probably driving around in circles.

Many drivers have become so attached to their navigation systems that they'd be lost—literally—if the get-me-there gadgetry stopped working. What's more, relying too much on technical assistance may be numbing people's noggins, according to a study by Veronique Bohbot, an associate professor of psychiatry at McGill University in Montreal. "Becoming dependent on a GPS and no longer paying attention to the environment around you when you're going places can shrink your hippocampus—a section of the brain that helps with navigation and long-term memory—and compromise your own internal sense of direction," she says.
